Bob, I liked your humorous take on the story about what can happen to a pollster in Tanzania. However, I did very public-released polls about the effectiveness of a spokesperson for a business association and about two competing car rental companies in the U.S. In both cases, I was threatened with legal action by the companies and people polled about. I gave them the entire questionnaires, the data, the sampling procedures, and the written report and said show me where I have been biased, and in both cases the potential litigants went away. My point is that even here in the good old USA., if you conduct surveys for public release at one time or another you will be threatened with legal action, and as long as you have followed the rules and standards for objective surveys the opposition will not usually win.
